Bangladesh Two major opposition parties — The BNP and The Jamaat-e-Islami — called a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for June 5 2011 to protest against cancellation of the caretaker government system.BNP acting secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the dawn-to-dusk shutdown at a press conference at party’s Naya Paltan-based headquarters on Wednesday. “We’re rejecting the government decision and declaring the hartal programme.” Fakhrul claimed that the ruling Awami League-led coalition government took the decision since they were “certain about their defeat in the next election”.It is the fifth general strike since the current Awami League-led Grand Alliance came to power on Jan 9, 2009.The programme comes a day after prime minister Sheikh Hasina said there was no way to retain the caretaker government provision after the Supreme Court order.BNP has threatened not to participate in general elections if the provision was scrapped. The party’s policymaking standing committee at a meeting on Tuesday protested the government move and threatened to wage a tough street movement to press its demand.Meanwhile, Jamaat also called daylong hartal for the same day on the same ground.Jamaat Acting Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam announced the programme at a press conference at the party’s Moghbazar central office. The announcement came hot in the heels of a political debate brewing over the dissolution of the CG system by the Supreme Court. On Monday, the premier did not give consent to continuation of the interim government system when the parliamentary special committee on constitutional amendment, at a meeting with the PM, proposed two different models of caretaker government for two more general elections.Rejecting the move to scrap the caretaker government system, the BNP termed it a ploy to destroy democracy and a blueprint to establish one-party rule.“No free and fair election was ever held under Awami League governments in the past and it won’t happen in future also. Election under Awami League won’t be acceptable; and people will resist its ill motive,” BNP said in a statement issued after a standing committee meeting Tuesday night. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, also head of the four-party alliance, on Monday night convened emergency meetings of her party’s standing committee and leaders of four party alliance and decided to go for a simultaneous movement. “No free and fair election was ever held under Awami League governments in the past and it won’t happen in future also. Election under Awami League won’t be acceptable; and people will resist its ill motive,” BNP said in a statement issued after a standing committee meeting Tuesday night. After the press conference on Wednesday, Mirza Fakhrul said: “We are rejecting the government decision and declaring the hartal for June 5 across the country to protest the decision.” He, however, said the areas going to Union Parishad elections on Sunday will be out of the purview of the hartal. “Caretaker government was a settled issue. There was no debate on it. Has the court any jurisdiction to deliver a verdict on a settled issue? It’s not mandatory for the people and parliament to accept the Supreme Court verdict,” he added. Download "Alien heart" instumental album Early marriageArticle by : urmee islam-IBA rajshahi university
Published by : masum Marriage is a big episode in the life of an individual as well as for his or her clase relatives. However, early marriage is quite the opposite and it brings despairs and often fatal consequences, especially for the bride, as it is forcefully imposed upon her. Early marriage is an infringement of a girl’s human rights. It brings an end to the beautiful childhood and education, health, security and other developments. In Bangladesh, early marriage is widespread due to poverty, lack of awareness and education , patriarchal beliefs and values, social unrests, and negative attitude towards girl children. UNICEF ‘s state of the world Children Report 2009 shows that, in Bangladesh, one-third of the children within the age of 15 to 19 are either giving birth to children or are pregnant. The rate of early marriage is alarmingly higher in the rural areas than in the urban areas. According to early marriage prevention law of 1929, early marriage means any marriage between a girl of less than 18 years of age and a boy of less than 21 years of age. However the reality is, the meaning of marriage itself is not clear to the victim girls, since their full mental and physical growth does not take place at such an early age. They fall into the trap of family burden to early and as a consequence fail to cope with the inevitable unwanted troubles of family and conjugal life. The impact of early marriage is huge and especially the girls becomes victim to many negative and harsh realities of married life. Apart from the direct negative consequences, the long term impact of early marriage is also huge. Early marriage result in early pregnancy and motherhood, which ultimately causes infant and maternal deaths. UNICEF reveals that at least two hundred thousand children are born stunted and with severe malnutrition. Besides, young mothers are not aware or mature enough to take proper care of the children as well as themselves. In 1990 , as high as 13 crore children could not avail primary education and among them 8.10 crore were girl children. Early marriage is a major cause among other reasons. Early marriage hampers education the most. As a result , the society and state miss out their valuable potential contributions. Another serious consequence of early marriage is domestic violence. Girls subjected to marry at a stage when they have least prepared for family life simply struggle to cope with the hassle and bustle of marital life.As a result, for most girls, life becomes like hell. Thus their survival becomes endangered and distressed. They start moving towards an unknown future, which they never even thought of. Though there are laws against early marriage the implmication or application is so weak that it does not contribute to lower the rate. While reform of the laws is essential with provisions or strict punishment, effective use of it should also have to be ensured. Verification of birth registration certificate to prove the eligibility of the bride and groom for the marriage must be ensured. However, mere laws can not prevent early marriage and there is a need for social awareness and collective initiative to redress the issue. The issue is culturally and socially interconnected with various discriminatory beliefs and practices. All conscious citizens need to come forward to fight the issue. Initiatives should be started s. from the grass roots to national level. Union parishad , marriage registars, imams, teachers, doctors, lawyers , journalists and the youth-all should stretch their hands. Collective initiative and movements can help take different preventive measures. Negative attitude towards girl children should be removed from the society. educ ation and awarenes of the parents is also important for that, for which various social and community development organizations an d clubs can play a positive role. pahela baishakh in rajshahi university 2011Observing pohela boisakh first time of IBA , RU 5th Batch
